Eoin Morgan has made it clear that Ian Bell and Moeen Ali are going to be the first choice openers for England in the upcoming triangular series as well as the World Cup.
Moeen had played quite well as opener in Sri Lanka. So, he was always going to occupy one of the opening slots, but, Bell was supposed to be a contender for the no. 3 slot.
However, it seems Morgan is not that convinced about the ability of Alex Hales to play the two new balls in Australian conditions and thus, he has decided to back Bell.
According to Morgan though, form is going to be a key factor as well. If Bell or Moeen loses form at any point of time over the course of these two tournaments, Alex Hales will have his way into the XI.
The selectors, while naming Morgan as the new captain, had said that they want the Three Lions to play attacking brand of cricket.
So, it was thought that the England team management would throw both Hales and Moeen at the top of the order and ask them to play their natural game without the fear of failure.
But, now that Bell is going to be there opening the innings and James Taylor being tipped to come in at 3, it seems England would continue being circumspect in the starting phase of the innings.
Bell’s experience and class can certainly not be matched by Hales at this point of time, but, the latter has that special ability to destruct the opposition bowlers. Morgan must keep that in mind.
It’s also a fact, however, that Hales has not made full use of the opportunities that he has got in One Day International Cricket so far.
