Like most of the people in England, Eoin Morgan also believes that the man who deserves to go out there to open the innings for England in the first test match against Sri Lanka is none other than Sam Robson.
Morgan is Robson’s teammate at his county Middlesex and he is very impressed with the way the Australian born player has developed himself as a batsman in the last few years.
Robson should perhaps have got the opportunity to make his test debut last year itself as he was in brilliant form in domestic circuit, but, England preferred to go with Carberry and Root both of whom turned out to be flops.
Carberry and Root are still in the mix though and so is Nick Compton who had opened with Cook on the tours of India and New Zealand, but, it seems that Robson would be able to beat all of them this time around as far as securing a place in the test team is concerned.
Talking about Robson yesterday, Morgan said, “I haven’t played that much alongside him. In fact, we batted together for the first time ever in that game against Nottingham, but, I must say it was a treat to see him bat from the other end.”
“He knows his strengths pretty well and he just sticks to them. The other impressive aspect of his game is his ruthlessness. If he is out there at the crease, the scorecard will keep ticking over all the time.”
Robson, who is a right handed batsman, has played 66 first class matches for Middlesex in which he has scored more than 4000 runs at a healthy average of 42.29. He has got 12 hundreds and 16 half centuries under his belt till date.
